Ribbon cutting for newly renovated Brownell-Holmes STEM Academy Campus

The Flint Community Schools hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for the newly renovated Campus of Brownell STEM Academy & Holmes STEM Middle School Academy Sept. 17, 2025. This celebration marks a transformative milestone in the district’s ongoing commitment to educational excellence and community partnership.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer joined Flint Community Schools Superintendent Kevelin Jones, along with members of the Flint Board of Education, district leaders, the Brownell-Holmes Neighborhood Association, community members, Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley, and Charles Stewart Mott Foundation President and CEO Ridgway White, to celebrate the successful completion of this project reaffirming the R4 vision: Re-Energizing the Pride, Renovating the Plans, Rebuilding the Possibilities, and Repurposing for a Brighter Future. This milestone represents the next phase in transforming education in Flint and providing scholars with an exceptional learning experience.

This event did not just unveil a newly renovated campus, but the realization of a shared vision. Flint Community Schools, in collaboration with The Flint Center for Educational Excellence and The Brownell-Holmes Neighborhood Association, embraced a co-design model throughout this renovation process. Parents, scholars, staff, and community members worked side by side to ensure the spaces reflect the aspirations and needs of the entire community.

Campus Highlights Include:

  • Upgraded classrooms designed for 21st-century learning
  • A brand-new Early Childhood Center serving children ages 6 weeks to 5 years
  • Modern athletic and recreational facilities, including football, soccer, pickleball,
    basketball, and a competition-ready track
  • New gymnasiums in both the Holmes and Brownell buildings
  • The Cube @ Brownell-Holmes, a 5,000-square-foot community hub for after-school
    programming, enrichment, and neighborhood engagement

These improvements were made possible through a combination of federal ESSER funds — more than $26 million — and the generous support of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, which contributed over $14 million. Together, these investments have transformed two school
buildings into a thriving STEM-focused community education campus serving scholars from infancy through adulthood.

Following the ceremony, guests had the opportunity to tour the campus and experience firsthand the spaces designed to inspire and empower scholars, families, and the greater Flint Community.
