NETWORKED IMPROVEMENT
COMMUNITY - K-3
The Network for School Excellence is partnering with 8 schools in 6 school systems through a Networked Improvement Community (NIC) to develop and test strategies to improve outcomes for students and build supportive schools for all families. Network schools serve as demonstration sites of how different types of schools can best serve Flint children and families. Lessons learned from Network schools will be shared with other schools and districts in the area to ensure that Flint kids thrive, regardless of where they attend school.
OUR THEORY OF CHANGE
Shared Aim
By 2028, the Network aims to increase the percentage of students who are achieving growth and proficiency in their math and literacy skills, as measured by the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP), NWEA, or iReady.
Shared Practices
Network teachers receive guided support from the American Institutes for Research in selecting instructional change ideas to implement within their respective classrooms weekly. These interventions can be paired or scaffolded with other strategies and teachers to improve outcomes for all students.
Continuous Improvement
Together, Network teachers are implementing practices evidenced to improve student outcomes using the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) continuous improvement process. Teachers receive in-classroom coaching prior to implementing lessons and collect data on student proficiency after each lesson to determine if their strategy impacted students’ understanding of instructional standards. These data are used by Network teachers, coaches, and leaders to improve the next iteration of instruction.
Shared Learning & Development
Network teachers come together bi-monthly to review data, diagnose challenges, develop action plans, and celebrate successes. By collaborating across schools and school systems to rigorously test and refine solutions to common problems, the Network improves instructional quality across Flint’s educational ecosystem.
